Billing & Payers

In Fren One, subscriptions belong to projects, not individual people. This means the whole team benefits from the plan, and billing responsibilities can be handed off without losing any history or configuration.

Who can manage billing

Three roles have access to billing:

RoleWhat they can do
OwnerFull billing access: view subscription, change plans, manage payment, initiate takeover
Project AdminSame as Owner for billing purposes
Billing AdminCan view and manage the subscription, but has no access to other project areas
info

Only the payer can manage the actual payment method. Other billing-capable members can see subscription details and initiate a billing takeover, but they can't change the credit card on file for someone else.

What is the "payer"?

The payer is the specific person whose payment method is currently funding the project's subscription. Usually this is the Owner, but it can be any billing-capable member who has taken over the subscription.

The payer is shown on the billing page. If you're not the payer, you'll see their name and a button to initiate a billing takeover if needed.

When the payer leaves or changes

If the current payer leaves the project, is removed, or transfers ownership, the following happens automatically:

  1. The subscription is set to cancel at the end of the current billing period — nothing cuts off immediately.
  2. An alert appears in the project Inbox, and an email goes to all billing-capable members.
  3. Any billing-capable member can take over the subscription before the period ends, which creates a new subscription starting exactly when the old one would have expired — no gap, no double charge.
warning

If no one takes over before the period ends, the subscription will end and communities in the project will drop to the free tier immediately.

Billing takeover

A billing takeover lets a billing-capable member attach their own payment method to the project's subscription, continuing it seamlessly.

To take over:

  1. Go to the Billing page.
  2. Click Take over billing.
  3. Complete the checkout flow with your payment details.
  4. The old subscription ends at its natural period boundary; yours begins there.

The takeover is designed so there's never a double-charge: your first billing date is exactly when the previous subscription would have ended.

What happens to billing when a community is detached

When a community leaves a project (whether by manual detach, owner unlink, or auto-detach), it immediately loses access to premium features. There are no partial credits or refunds for time remaining on the subscription — the subscription stays with the project, and the community starts on the free tier until it joins a new project with an active subscription.

If a community joins a new project that has an active subscription, premium features restore right away.

Tier and feature details

The specific features available on each plan are coming soon. We're finalizing the billing tier architecture and will update this page when it's ready.
